Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be applied in a wide variety of fields – including some unexpected or hard-to-imagine areas. One of those is dating platforms, where AI solutions can undoubtedly be both effective and impactful. So, it’s no surprise that one of the most well-known dating platforms – Tinder – is also keeping up with this modernization and the integration of AI technology.

AI in dating platforms

Online dating in the age of technology is highly popular and takes place not only on social media, but also through dedicated dating apps. These platforms are now using AI to further personalize the user experience.

One of the main benefits of AI on such platforms is finding the right match. The data amounts that algorithms can process are enormous. Based on interests, communication style, and behavioural patterns, AI tools can very precisely determine interpersonal compatibility.

Moreover, dating apps like Tinder may include tools to reduce language barrier issues. With real-time translation features, users who speak different languages can easily hold a conversation.

AI can also offer personalized advice and suggestions on how to communicate with another person – when is the best time to message them, what tone of voice to use when starting the conversation, and so on.

This time Tinder offers something unique

As of 2024, Tinder has 9.6 million subscribers – more than any other online dating app. The number of active users exceeds 60 million people.

Recently, company announced a new feature involving so-called AI personalities that will help users improve their flirting skills. More specifically, it is an OpenAI-based AI robot that simulates the flirting process with the user. Based on the ongoing conversation, the system will provide scores and suggestions to help the user improve their dating skills.

This new feature is called Tinder’s The Game Game. By pressing a separate button, the user enters a space where a card deck appears. It includes various AI personalities (by age and gender) and unique introduction scenarios. Using voice input, the robot initiates the conversation. Users must apply all their skills and flirting abilities to succeed in arranging a date by the end of the dialogue.

After the interaction, users are rated on a three-level scale using flame emojis. Real-time feedback is provided during the conversation. Once it’s over, users receive tips on what went well, what should be improved, and what to avoid.

However, the company warns not to take the game too seriously. The Game Game runs on OpenAI’s Realtime API and uses GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, and the Moderation API, ensuring privacy and safety standards. For now, it will be available to iOS users in the U.S. for a limited time.

Final Thoughts

It seems that the dating app market, including Tinder, is evolving in a completely new direction. Adventurous, bold users eager to test their flirting abilities can jump right in and – regardless of how they perform – receive valuable advice along the way.
