Videos are one of the most reliable, engaging, and attractive tools for professionals across various fields. While not everyone is advanced in video production and editing, today’s technology and artificial intelligence (AI) provide the opportunity for anyone to easily create and edit content. Recently, Instagram introduced a new video editing app Edits, which we will explore further in this article.
Instagram Opens New Possibilities for Creators with Edits
On April 22, one of the world’s most well-known and popular social networking platforms for sharing photos and videos, Instagram, announced the launch of Edits – a new video creation app targeted at content creators.

According to the company, this will further support one of Instagram’s main goals – to help people express their creativity. The platform provides all the necessary tools for the creative process in one place.
This means that creators can manage the entire process in one place from start to finish: developing ideas, managing projects, editing, and exporting. The app comes with a range of new features such as a high-quality camera, a precise timeline, and visual effects.
To optimize their work, creators will also be able to explore and draw inspiration from trending videos and audio tracks directly within the platform.
The following features are included:
- Multistream editing – the platform allows video editing using a timeline with multiple video streams.
- Project management – as mentioned, users can manage several projects in one place.
- Notes – a unique feature that allows archiving notes for future projects.
- Trends – access to trending content and the most popular videos and soundtracks.
- Long videos – Instagram allows video recording up to 3 minutes long, but Edits enables editing videos up to 10 minutes.
- Various elements – including video effects, animations, AI integration, subtitles, and more.
- Watermark-free – export is available without a watermark, and videos can be uploaded directly to Instagram or downloaded for use on other platforms.
Edits Will Continue to Evolve
The company emphasizes that Edits will be further improved in the future, and user feedback at this stage is crucial for Instagram to continue developing the platform.
Although the app has only just launched, the company has already announced upcoming updates that the Instagram team is actively working on:
- Keyframes – an editing feature that allows precise animation of position, rotation, scale, etc.
- Modification – AI integration for styling and modifying videos.
- Collaboration – the ability to share drafts with colleagues for feedback.
- Feature integration – new fonts, text animations, transitions, voice and sound effects, filters, soundtracks, and more.
The app is free, although it is stated that some AI features may become paid in the future.
Is Edits a TikTok CapCut Clone?
Some are comparing this Instagram update to the competitive pressure from a very similar platform – TikTok’s CapCut.
Essentially, the features offered by Edits are similar to CapCut, integrating project management, animation, sound elements, AI, and more. The similarity is highlighted by the fact that Instagram announced their video creation platform just as TikTok and CapCut became temporarily unavailable in U.S. app stores, and it was presented as an alternative for video creation.
Instagram representatives admit that there may be similarities, but claim their video creation platform is more targeted at content creators than casual video users.
Instagram Moves Beyond its Original Goals
Instagram was launched in 2010, and as we can see, it has moved far beyond its original goals stated at the beginning of its activity. What began as an app for sharing personal photos now includes a wide range of features, video effects, music tracks, and is clearly moving toward AI. For businesses, it has become one of the most powerful communication channels.
Instagram continues to shape the social media landscape with its new features, possibilities, and creator-focused tools. In the coming years, we will likely see even greater development of Edits and be able to evaluate its impact and competition with CapCut.
