OpenAI Takes a Significant Step Forward with the ChatGPT Agent
On July 17, OpenAI announced the launch of a new tool — an enhanced AI feature with agent-like capabilities built into one of the world’s most popular virtual assistants, ChatGPT.
According to the company, ChatGPT will now be able to complete entire tasks on behalf of users — from start to finish. This is made possible by a unified agentic system that combines three main components: the ability to interact with websites, deep research skills to synthesize information, and ChatGPT’s conversational intelligence.
This system can handle tasks using what’s referred to as a private virtual computer, seamlessly switching between reasoning and actions to manage complex workflows from beginning to end, guided by pre-set instructions.
Tasks Performed by the ChatGPT Agent
This marks the beginning of a new phase in digital work. The ChatGPT Agent now acts as a kind of digital coworker capable of creating PowerPoint presentations, browsing websites, placing orders, conducting research, and performing other complex tasks almost autonomously.

Unlike traditional AI tools, the agent can handle multiple stages of a task without constant human oversight.
In addition to the aforementioned capabilities, the agent can manage user calendars, notify about upcoming client meetings, plan and purchase ingredients for specific recipes, conduct detailed analyses, filter results, and prepare Excel spreadsheets with data.
The new feature includes a robust toolkit: a visual browser that interacts with the web via a graphical interface, a text-based browser for simpler, reasoning-based queries, a terminal, and direct API access. It can also use ChatGPT’s integrations to connect with apps like Gmail, GitHub, and more.
ChatGPT Agent is available to Pro, Plus, and Team users via the “Build” menu by selecting the “agent mode”.

Tech giants are increasingly emphasizing the rise of agentic capabilities and forecasting rapid growth in this area. For example, the global AI agents market is projected to grow from $5 billion in 2024 to $50 billion by 2030, a rapid increase that reflects the rising demand for these tools.
Agentic functions go well beyond simple Q&A interactions, allowing users to complete complex workflows and effectively become digital coworkers capable of taking over repetitive or routine tasks. These tools already operate across multiple tabs and platforms, performing various actions and working for extended periods.
